Protecting your skin in winter weather

Even NOLA gets colder weather, if only for a short period of time. Your skin is the largest organ in your body, and it's important to protect it with weather changes.

Even if your skin is prone to acne, and especially if you use acne medication, keeping a protective moisture barrier will keep your skin healthy in colder weather.

Face care for dryer or combination skin types:

After cleansing, pat skin dry, then apply a non-comedogenic moisturizer like Ceraphil or Cerave. Cerave feels a little heavier than Cetaphil, so it's better for those with really dry skin. Choose the "cream" not a "lotion." Lotions have thinning agents in them that can be bothersome to sensitive skin. Let it dry for about 10 minutes prior to applying any acne medication or other products.

Non-comedogenic means it won't clog your pores and cause acne.

Face care for acne-prone skin types:

After cleansing, pat skin dry, then apply a non-comedogenic (means it won't clog pores) moisturizer meant for acne-prone skin. Cerave or Cetaphil make some good picks for this as well. You could use regular Cetaphil or Cerave moisturizer like above, or you could use one with a little bit of acne product in it like salicylic acid. Let the moisturizer dry for about 10 minutes prior to applying any acne medication or other products.

For all skin types:

Anyone can get skin cancer, regardless of age, gender, or skin tone. An estimated one in five Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime. Even though the sun doesn't seem as bright or last as long in the winter, sunscreen, at least on the face/neck/ears, is still very important--especially if you're around snow or water, which will reflect the damaging rays onto your face and enhance the damaging effects. Sunscreen can also help prevent premature skin aging, such as wrinkles and age spots, which are caused by too much unprotected UV exposure.

Choose a sunscreen that is broad-spectrum, which protects against UVA and UVB rays. Make sure it's at least 30 spf, and "non-comedogenic."

DiamondGlow:

If you're someone who likes to treat your skin to special treatments like DiamondGlow, consider switching up your serum to a more hydrating one over the winter, like the HA5® Hydra Collagen Pro-Infusion Serum designed to quench your skin with deep hydration to promote optimal epidermal skin health.

Skincare is self care, so give your skin the special treatment it deserves over the winter, and happy "wintering" in NOLA.

Take good care,

~Dr. Holt
